Making a Soft Indie Pop Song With Sonnox Plugins
What does it take to turn an idea into a finished indie pop track? We asked Trev Barnes, a master of indie pop production, to build a song from scratch, starting with the writing and carrying it through to the final mix.
For the production challenge, Sonnox plugins were at the heart of the mix, alongside a couple of other tools. The result is a full look at how a song develops, from its first ideas to a polished production.
Building the song from the ground up
Rather than jumping straight into mixing, Trev starts at the writing stage and shapes the track as it takes form. The session follows the decisions behind the production, showing how the parts come together and how the sound evolves along the way.
That makes this more than a plugin demonstration. It is a chance to see the creative process in context, with the writing, production and mix all contributing to the finished song.
Adding space and control with Sonnox
One of the details we loved was Trev’s use of the room preset in Oxford Reverb to bring life to a drum VST. A small sense of space can help programmed drums feel more present in the production.
Later, Oxford Dynamics comes into play on the acoustic guitars, helping Trev shape their dynamics within the arrangement. These are just two moments from a session full of practical production choices.
